bluish white with either a crisp, bright finish or a soft, satin
sheen. It resists tarnish, retaining its color and finish
indefinitely.

20. What is Amethyst?
Amethyst is a transparent, coarse-grained variety of the silica
mineral quartz. It is valued as a semiprecious gem for its
violet color. Often times more expensive purple gemstones are
compared to its color and beauty. The Amethyst has a wide range
of purple shades. Experts believe that the magnificent color of
the Amethyst is due to its iron content. It is a popular
gemstone. If it were not for its widespread availability,
Amethyst would be very expensive.
Amethyst is popular for its color and nice crystal shapes that
produce a handsome, purple, sparkling cluster. It is usually
facetted with step cuts or emerald cuts. It has been used for
carving and engravings since ancient times.
The color purple is traditionally the color of royalty and
amethyst has been used since the dawn of history to adorn the
rich and powerful monarchs and rulers. Today, amethyst is a
lovely and affordable gemstone that is fortunately available in
a wide variety of cut and uncut stones that we can all possess
and admire.
The name is derived from the Greek amethystos, meaning, "not
intoxicated". In ancient times people believed that the stone
would protect its owner against drunkenness.
Different localities produce unique amethyst to their particular
region. Amethyst can be found in Mexico, Brazil, Canada,
Uruguay, Italy, Africa, Germany, Russia, And in the United
States: Maine, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.
Amethyst is mentioned in the Bible twice:Exodus 39:10 13: “In the Breastplate of Aaron…and the third
row, a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst…”
Revelation 21:18 – 20; And the foundations of the wall of the
city were garnished with all manner of precious stones…the
twelfth, an amethyst.”
Amethyst is the birthstone for February.
Amethyst is the anniversary gemstone for the 6th year of
marriage.
21. What is Pyrite?
Pyrite is often called “Fools Gold”, because of its similarity
in color and shape to gold. In the old mining days Pyrite was
often confused with Gold. Pyrite is the most common shiny brassy
yellow mineral. It is also the most common mineral to be
mistaken for gold. Pyrite is a favorite among rock collectors.
It can have a beautiful luster and interesting crystals. It is
so common in the earth's crust that it is found in almost every
possible environment; consequently it has a vast number of forms
and varieties.
Pyrite is a naturally occurring iron disulfide mineral. Pure
pyrite contains 46.67 percent iron and 53.33 percent sulfur.
Although pyrite is common and contains a high percentage of
iron, it has never been used as a significant source of iron.
Pyrite can be produced by molten rock segregation, by
hydrothermal solutions, and as stalactitic growth. It occurs as
an accessory mineral in igneous rocks, in vein deposits with
quartz and sulfide minerals, and in sedimentary rocks, such as
shale, coal, and limestone. Pyrite usually occurs in or near the
contact of eruptive rocks.
Pyrite has been mined for its sulfur content. During WWII,
sulfur was in demand as a strategic chemical and Sulfur mines
were drying up. A sulfide deposit near Ducktown, Tennessee mined
pyrite and other sulfides to produce the needed sulfur. It was
used in the production of sulfuric acid, an important chemical
for industrial purposes. Now most sulfur production comes from
H2S gas recovered from natural gas wells.
The name comes from the Greek word pyr, “fire,” because pyrite
emits sparks when struck by steel. It has been found in
prehistoric burial mounds, which suggests their use as a means
of producing fire.
Wheel-lock guns, in which a spring-driven, serrated wheel
rotated against a piece of pyrite, were used before development
of the flintlock.
Pyrite weathers rapidly to hydrated iron oxide which produces a
characteristic yellow-brown stain or coating, such as on rusty
quartz.
22. What is Rose Quartz?
Rose quartz is one of the most desirable varieties of quartz.
The iron and titanium impurities create the unique pink to rose
red color. It is unlike any other pink mineral species.
Rose quartz is used as an ornamental stone and as a gemstone.
Rose quartz is a very attractive ornamental stone. It is often
carved into popular spheres, pyramids, figurines and ornate
statues.
Although rose quartz is usually too cloudy to be used as a cut
gemstone, a few exceptional pieces are found with enough clarity
and color to make fine gems.
Rose quartz occurs in Brazil, Sweden, Namibia, California, and
Maine.
23. What is Agate?
Agate is a common semiprecious mineral. It occurs in various
colors and transparency. Agate is essentially quartz. Most
commercial agate is artificially stained for ornamental purposes
due to the stones dull-gray tints.
Agate normally occurs in cavities of eruptive rocks or ancient
lava. It has a banded structure. Successive layers being
parallel to the sides of the cavity.
Varieties of agate are characterized by peculiarities in the
shape and color of the bands. In riband agate the bands appear
as straight lines in cross section. With white bands alternating
with bands of black, brown, or red. A ring or eye agate has
concentric circular bands of different colors.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica: It is probable that they
have been formed as follows. During cooling of the lava, steam
and other gases form bubbles. The bubbles overtaken by
solidification are frozen in, forming cavities. Long after the
rock has solidified, water—carrying silica in solution, probably
as alkali silicate—penetrates into the bubble and coagulates to
a silica gel. Soluble components of the iron-bearing rock
diffuse into the silica gel and produce the regular layers of
iron hydroxide. Finally the whole mass gradually hardens with
loss of water and crystallization of much of the silica as
quartz or chert. During crystallization, the colored bands are
not disturbed.
Prior to 1900 Agate was abundant in the Idar-Oberstein district
of Germany. After 1900 Brazil and Uruguay supplied most agates.
It can be found throughout the world. In the United States it is
produced in several western states including Oregon, Washington,
Idaho, and Montana.
